Hear Our Patient Stories

I was a bit hesitant and even depressed when I first wore my hearing aids. I felt like a part of me was missing when I compared myself to other people. But over time I realised that to be able to hear sound is a gift.

Now I can communicate with my family and friends. This is important as retirees like me need companions from time to time. Hence, I urge all hearing impaired people to use it.

It may not be comfortable during the adjustment phase but hearing and communication is an important aspect of our lives.

Mr. Richard Peng

I was delighted when I got my hearing aids, I can enjoy many things which I couldn’t before. For example, I can go to the movies, I can communicate with people.

What makes me the happiest is that I can understand the sharing in my bible study group.

Before I only pretend to understand what people were saying. I feel much more alive being able to communicate well with people again.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it expensive to get a hearing aid to help me with my hearing loss?

Hearing aids are medical devices that are a worthwhile investment for your health. The cost of hearing aids goes beyond just the technology and features. As part of our dedication to delivering a quality product that can improve your life, Hearing Partners offers complimentary services like aftercare, hearing aid adjustments, and more. In addition, there are subsidies that you can apply for.

With over 118 years of experience located across 24 markets, we are constantly innovating and Oticon hearing aids are developed with cutting-edge technology that can improve your health and quality of life.

Will I be able to cope without hearing aids despite hearing loss being a common occurrence for someone my age?

Dementia, depression, and other health issues have been linked to untreated hearing loss. It is therefore important to treat hearing loss, regardless of whether it is mild or moderate. Hearing aids (Oticon More) are an example of a treatment that can be sought to treat hearing loss and improve communication, while reducing brain health risk and supporting brain health. Hearing loss is one of the most significant contributing factors to dementia that can be treated. Oticon More is able to:

    • Deliver 30% more sound to the brain
    • Increase speech understanding by 15%
    • Reduce listening effort so that one remembers more of what is being said

Does a hearing aid amplify all sounds?

With BrainHearing™ Technology, Oticon More is the world’s first hearing aid with a Deep Neural Network embedded on the chip that provides superior sound quality. With the use of AI technology, 12 million real-life sounds are used to train the Deep Neural Network to identify details within relevant sounds, allowing your brain to process sounds more effectively.

How long does a hearing aid last?

The average lifetime of a hearing aid is 3-5 years. However, it depends on how well you take care of your hearing aids. Here’s how you can take care of your hearing aids:

    • Leave the battery compartment open when you are not using your hearing aids. This conserves battery life and helps ventilate any moisture.
    • Always keep your hearing aids clean and dry; get into the habit of cleaning your hearing aids every day.
    • Use a clean cloth and a small brush to clean your hearing aids. Never use oil, water, or household cleaning products.
    • Check the sound output every day – after you have cleaned them – and remove earwax if necessary.
    • Always check you have removed your hearing aids before you go swimming, take a shower, or apply hair spray.

Do I need to upgrade to a new hearing aid if I’m only using it when going out?

To experience the full benefits of using hearing aids, it is always recommended to use them in all circumstances and throughout the entire day. The latest technology of Oticon’s new hearing aids gives better sound supports in outdoor and noisy listening situations. It allows better speech understanding and listening attention with less effort. Consider doing a risk-free trial to discover the difference before deciding whether to upgrade.

When is it time to change your hearing aids?

    • Your hearing aids don’t work as well as they used to, even after numerous repairs.
    • Your hearing aids don’t have the latest technology such as Bluetooth connectivity for streaming to devices and rechargeability.
    • When you want to harness the latest development of hearing aid technology to improve your listening experience.
    • Your hearing loss has worsened and you can no longer hear as well as before.
    • The hearing aids you purchased online don’t work.
    • If any of the above statements apply to you, it’s time to consider an upgrade!

Why are hearing aids so expensive?

A large percentage of the cost is due to the amount of research and development needed to continually improve the technology that powers your hearing aid. These days, advanced technology uses digital software to enable the filtering of unwanted background noise and enhance speech and environmental sounds. Moreover, hearing aids are often customised to ensure they correct your specific hearing issues and meet your comfort preferences and lifestyle requirements.

What are the differences between cheap hearing aids sold online and those prescribed by hearing care professionals?

Hearing aids are registered as a medical device by Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA). Many “hearing aids” sold online are not actually hearing aids but Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAP) which are not registered as medical devices. They often provide sub-standard general amplification and often do not work very well as compared to professionally prescribed and fitted hearing aids. These devices may further damage the hearing system if it is overly amplified without proper adjustment and assessment.

Additionally, a hearing care professional is not physically available to offer any assistance for prescription and fitting, so there is no way it can be adjusted according to the user’s hearing level. If you go to a clinic, there will be:

    • a proper consultation with a hearing test conducted by a hearing care professional,
    • a post-fitting review and hearing aid tuning by the hearing care professional,
    • on-the-spot hearing aid troubleshooting service, and
    • further counselling on communication strategies while wearing hearing aids.

Can I use MediSave to purchase hearing aids?

No, it is currently not available in hospitals and in private hearing care settings. That is why Oticon is offering a discount of up to $1,500 for a new pair of hearing aids if you bring in your old ones.

I have tinnitus. Will wearing hearing aids make it worse?

Hearing aids will not worsen tinnitus. In fact, it may help to decrease the effect of tinnitus. There is also a feature within Oticon’s hearing aids to reduce the effect of tinnitus via sound masking and relaxation. Consult with our audiologists or audiometricians for advice tailored to your condition.

Does my ear wax build-up affect the sound quality of my hearing aids?

Excessive ear wax in the ear canal will affect the transmission of sound from the hearing aids to the ear. The wax buildup will also clog the output of the hearing aid causing the sound to be weak, distorted or non-existent. This is one of the leading causes of hearing aid repair. Thus to prevent this, it is advisable to clean your hearing aids daily.
